Providing different types of hospital bed lighting for patients is one way to ensure that they are as comfortable as possible during the hospital stay. While general room lighting may always be one during waking hours, giving the patient the option to adjust for their own personal preference for light is always a good option. Patients can increase the light to read, when visiting with friends and family or to work on their computer or write a letter. They can also choose to dim the light or shut it off completely to watch television, rest or to nap or sleep.

While overhead lighting that can be adjusted to specific light intensity is important, there is also the need for specialized hospital bed lighting in treatment areas. This light may need to be direct and indirect, which allows for both brighter and dimmer lighting options. The indirect light in these types of fixtures shines upwards, providing a gentle light for overall vision in the room. The direct light, which shines down onto the patient bed or examination table or area is more focused, providing an excellent light source for nurses, doctors and medical staff. It is also an effective reading or working light for the patient to use.

Some of the new styles of hospital bed lighting offer at least two other types of light sources all in the same fixtures. This includes a specific reading light, which is energy saving since it doesn't use the light from the entire fixture, just a light that is directed to the center part of the patient bed area. The other option and one that is very comforting for a number of patients is a very low watt night light. This is often just a 7 watt light that provides enough light to see to move about the room in the night or to find a call button if needed. These night lights are also very helpful to medical staff that is checking in on patients throughout the night shift. With the low light from the nightlight providing enough light for vision there is no need to turn on overheads or other light sources that may constantly disturb the patient.

Choosing a style of hospital bed lighting that provides a less institutional look to the patient rooms, hallways, examination rooms and waiting room areas of the hospital or healthcare facility is also a part of making a comfortable environment. Stylish looking lights can help to offset the rather ominous and sometimes very practical décor found in hospital treatment rooms. This type of consideration in hospital bed lighting is particularly important in long term patient care areas of a hospital or in hospices, nursing homes and other types of long term care facilities.

Energy efficient hospital bed lighting can help reduce overall costs of operation of the facility. The multiple lighting option fixtures are definitely going to help reduce costs of having a simple on or off type of hospital bed lighting option.
